One final note of good news! On September 1st, we transfered the donated herbarium collection from The Nature Conservancy, Ocean Springs Field Office to GCRL. This small, but important collection documents the flora of rapidly disappearing Coastal Plain Savanna, and was collected by A. Clewell and Associates in early 2000 at the Old Fort Bayou Mitigation Bank. Our thanks to Matthew Miller (matthew.miller@tnc.org) of the Mississippi Nature Conservancy for expediting this process!

FUNDING AND EQUIPMENT

Thanks to the Mississippi Humanities Council for their award of $2500 to Mac Alford and P. Biber in Dec 2005. This will go towards the purchase of a copystand and lighting for digitization efforts.

Currently we a putting together a proposal to NSF SGER program for emergency funding to cover student manpower for 3 semesters worth of restoration efforts.

The American Society of Plant Taxonomists (APST) has being working diligently to acquire donations for the Herbarium Emergency Fund (HEF).

A Request for FEMA Collections assistance (FEMA Public Assistance Policy 9524.6) was submitted in Dec 2005 to help defray costs associated with salvage, stabilization, and restoration of specimens. - CLICK hyperlink to download the PDF of the application package submitted: FEMA_Herbarium_package.pdf

GCRL HERBARIUM RESTORATION TWIKI SITE

A tremendous effort was undertaken the weekend of Sept 16/17 by regional herbarium curators to salvage the remains of HGCRL – the 10’000+ specimen plant collection located at the lab and heavily damaged by the storm – more details and updates on the restoration effort at the Pullen Herbarium
